Stepping onto a disc golf course for the first time can be both exciting and a bit overwhelming. With a variety of shots to make, hazards to avoid, and rules to remember, there's a lot to take in. But don't worry we've got you covered. This beginner's guide will help you navigate a disc golf course and set you up for success in your first round.

Understanding the Course Layout

A standard disc golf course consists of 9 or 18 holes, each starting with a tee pad (where you make your first throw) and ending with a basket (the target). The goal is to get your disc into the basket in as few throws as possible. Along the way, you'll encounter fairways (the most direct path to the basket), rough areas (off the fairway), and various obstacles like trees, water hazards, and terrain changes.

Disc Golf Etiquette

Respect for other players and the course itself is a big part of disc golf. When playing, always let faster groups play through, and keep noise to a minimum when others are throwing. Stay on the fairways as much as possible to minimize damage to the course. After playing, make sure to pick up any trash and leave the course better than you found it.

Basic Rules to Remember

Disc golf follows many of the same rules as traditional golf. The player with the fewest throws on the previous hole usually throws first on the next one. Once everyone has thrown from the tee pad, the player whose disc is furthest from the basket throws next. And remember, you can't move your disc to a better spot it must be played where it lies (unless it lands in a water hazard or out of bounds).

Choosing Your Discs

As a beginner, you won't need a huge selection of discs. Start with a basic set that includes a driver, a mid-range disc, and a putter. As you gain experience and develop your technique, you can start to explore other types of discs. Remember, the right disc for you depends on your skill level, throwing style, and personal preference.

Your First Round: The Beginning of a Disc Golf Journey

Remember, disc golf is all about having fun. Don't worry if your first few rounds aren't perfect that's part of the learning process. The most important thing is to enjoy your time on the course, learn from each throw, and celebrate your progress. Happy disc golfing!
